Portion Control: Dieting made simple

Diet plans can be frustrating.  There are complicated regimens that involve specific meals and recipes, the elimination of one food category and too much of another, or supplements that can be costly and sometimes risky in terms of your health.

Analyze most plans, however, and you realize they are nothing more than contrived methods to cut calories or increase the amount you burn.

In addition, articles in the media often give the impression that to lose weight you have to alter your eating habits to include healthier, nutritionally balanced meals.  Aside from evidence that suggests most people won’t make that change for the long term, the truth is, dieting for weight loss and eating balanced meals are different.  Although balanced nutrition may be ideal, and there can be a relationship between that and weight loss, the fact is, you can gain weight on a healthy diet and lose weight on an unhealthy one.

Weight loss is about cutting calories, eating balanced meals is about making healthier food choices.

The mathematics of losing weight doesn’t change.  You simply have to eat fewer calories than you burn.  So why make it difficult?  You don’t have to sacrifice your favorite foods, skip meals or spend money on supplements.  Instead, just reduce your calorie consumption by regulating the foods you enjoy.  In essence, follow a portion control plan.  Change how much you eat, not what you eat.

iSELECT:  Making portion control more effective.

While the basics of portion control can be as simple as not cleaning your plate, a truly effective plan should guide you toward a safe rate of weight loss, and the means to keep it off.  (After all, if keeping weight off isn’t your real goal, why diet in the first place?)

With iSelect there is no guesswork, and the transition from weight loss to weight control is seamless.  You’ll know the goal weight that’s right for your age, height, body type, and activity level.  You’ll learn the amount of calories you should cut to get you there, and the amount you can eat to stay there.  And never again will you have to make major lifestyle changes or vary the foods you enjoy to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Don’t be a victim of fad diets.

Fad diets are not created to help you lose weight.  They’re developed to sell you something.  Your weight problem is secondary, at best.  A ton of money is spent every year on supplements, prescribed meal plans, and programs that radically alter your lifestyle.

And if only the pounds lost matched the dollars spent, America wouldn’t have an obesity crisis.

Unfortunately, though, more than 95% of all dieters regain two-thirds of their weight within a year, and can expect to regain all their weight, and possibly more, within five years.

There are two reasons why this happens.

First, fad diets promote weight loss as a primary goal.  When, in fact, the ultimate goal of a truly successful weight loss plan should be to keep the weight off.  Of course, losing the weight is the first step.  But, at best, it’s a halfway point.  Long term weight maintenance is what really matters.  Otherwise, why bother to diet in the first place?

Second, fad diets require radical changes in behavior.  Anyone and everyone that follows a fad diet will lose weight initially.  Early enthusiasm carries you through the first few weeks or even a couple of months.  But the regimens are too restrictive; they’re impractical, if not impossible to follow for the long term.  Consequently, dieters return to their old ways – the routines and eating habits they’re comfortable with.

Generally, fad diets are packaged and marketed around a theme.  However, when you strip away the hype, they’re essentially nothing more than contrived regimens that reduce calories.  And they make little or no provision for long-term weight management.

There is an alternative, though:  iSelect.

(Spoiler alert; here’s the commercial.)  iSelect gives you the direction you need to reduce calories simply and effectively through portion control.  No radical changes in behavior.  (And nothing to buy except a small, one-time fee that helps cover maintenance and hosting for this site.)  With iSelect, you continue to eat the foods you know and love, and make a seamless transition from weight loss to weight management with no radical changes in behavior.
